When We Get There

We said we’d know when we got there.

Three friends in the back of a brother’s car, singing louder than the band, sure that eighteen would be the answer. Then the first flat, the first pay gone by Monday, telling Mum you’ve eaten well.

Years later, older than the people who used to look grown-up to you, you realise the grown-ups were working it out too.

“I don’t have it all together,But I’ve got a life I’m glad is there.”
